In Uganda over 19 million of the country’s 35 million people are below the age of 18. About 6.9 million adults are illiterate, and about one-quarter of the population is unable to get adequate food for all, or part of the year. There are currently about 2.8 million orphans living in Uganda—about half of that number were orphaned by AIDS. Extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS is having an increasingly negative impact on families—and society in general.
Our strategy to break this cycle of poverty and despair is to focus on the children. We want to meet the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of children who are orphaned or don’t have the resources because of poverty.
It starts with the Gospel
We believe that the foundation of lasting change—in an individual, or a society—is having faith in God and the redemptive work that Jesus Christ, God’s son accomplished for us when he died on the cross and payed the penalty for our sin. We want every child to know and experience the love of Jesus, and have hope for the future—on this earth, and for eternity!
Feeding both body and soul
“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17)
We believe the Bible teaches us to demonstrate our faith by loving others the way Jesus loves us. We believe the second key to breaking the cycle of poverty and despair is education. Without education there is little hope of improving your condition or having the means to support yourself and others. When you sponsor a child, you enable that child to attend our school—Ebenezer Christian Academy. Our dedicated and knowledgeable teachers instruct the children in mathematics, English, science, and other basic subjects. Our students out-perform many other schools in standardized testing, and many go on to secondary education and some even attend college. The only limitation for these children is resources. Most of these children will be able to go all the way to college if they have the resources to do so.
When you sponsor a child, they will also be fed a meal at school. We currently have about 500 students attending Ebenezer Christian Academy but only 300 are receiving meals. We don’t have the resources to buy food for all the students because not all students are sponsored. It breaks our hearts, and children are encouraged to share, but for some children the meal they receive at school will be the only meal they eat all day. In addition to education and food, your sponsorship provides shoes, uniforms, clothing, school supplies and healthcare. You can provide so much for so little.
Engage Hope Ministries
Our United States ministry partner that handles the administration of our child sponsorships is Engage Hope Ministries. When you choose to sponsor one or more of our children in need, you will be redirected to their website to choose your child(ren) and they will process your payments. You can set up automatic payments for convenience if you prefer. You will be sent letters from your child periodically, and we encourage you to write back and send them a photo as many of them pray for their sponsors daily. It’s hard to imagine what a blessing it is for these children to have the opportunity to get an education, a meal, and some basic supplies. You will quite literally change their future!
